Requirements for a BA
in Art History and Archaeology: Art History option

Majors will in general follow the guidelines below, but each student's program is planned to meet individual interests and professional goals.

I. Required courses, 28 hour minimum:

  1. AHA 1110 and AHA 1120: History of Western Art 1 and 2 (6), 
    or GH 2111-2114 (12)
  2. At least 5 courses at the 3000 level, including one in each of the following fields:

    Ancient (3200s-3400s)
    Byzantine/Medieval (3500s)
    Renaissance/Baroque (3600s)
    18th Century to present (3700s)
    Arts of the Americas (3800s)

  3. AHA 4970: Capstone course in Art History and Archaeology (1)
  4. At least 2 courses at the 4000 level, after meeting appropriate prerequisites (6).

One course numbered 4005 through 4840 must be taken in conjunction with AHA 4970: Capstone within the last 45 hours of study for a total of 4 hours.

II. Other courses recommended for a well-rounded degree:

  • Humanities courses, such as history, literature, philosophy, aesthetics, film, classical studies, religious studies
  • Courses in anthropology, sociology, environmental design
  • Art courses (maximum 12 hours; 15 if declared as minor)
    Students are strongly urged to take at least one course in studio art.

III. Language requirement:

  • Study required through the reading level (i.e. 12 or 13 hours) in one language, such as German, French, Spanish or Italian.

Students who plan to attend graduate school are very strongly encouraged to study two languages.
