Admissions to the Graduate Program in Art History and Archaeology

The faculty admits a limited number of persons annually to the graduate programs. Candidates are expected to hold a recognized B.A. degree in art history or art, in archaeology or classical languages, or in related fields of the humanities and social sciences.

Applications must be submitted directly to the Graduate School through the ApplyYourself system. (Your application, transcripts, the GRE scores and application fee will all be accepted through the online application process.) The following supplemental materials must be submitted directly to the department:

  • three letters of recommendation concerning academic qualifications to undertake graduate work,
  • a short statement of the applicant's professional goals and reasons for applying to do graduate work in art history or archaeology,
  • a copy of a recent term paper as a sample of your scholarship and writing, and
  • curriculum vitae.

Qualifications

In addition to the 3.0 GPA required by the Graduate School, the Department requires:

  • a GPA of 3.3 in the major field
  • a combined score on the quantitative and verbal sections on the GRE of at least 1000, and a score on the analytical writing section of at least 4.5; or a total score of at least 1500 on the GRE if taken prior to 2002
  • at least three semesters of study of a single appropriate foreign language (normally German, French or Italian).

Applications to the Graduate School and supplemental materials for admission are due by January 18 for admission in the fall semester of that year. Submit supplemental materials to the following address
