The Graduate Program

General Information

The Department of Art History and Archaeology offers both a Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in art history and classical archaeology.

The MA program normally requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of course work; proficiency in reading German and French or Italian (and Greek or Latin for classical archaeology); and the completion of a written thesis. A non-thesis option requiring a single modern language and completion of a master's tutorial is also available. The program may be combined with interdisciplinary minors in Ancient Studies (9-15 hours in one department other than Art History and Archaeology); Medieval and Renaissance Studies; Historic Preservation (additional 15 hours); Museum Studies (additional 12 hours); or Women's Studies (additional 12-15 hours).

The PhD program requires an MA in art history or archaeology or its equivalent; for students whose MA did not require a thesis, the department reserves the right to require a substitute. A total of 42-48 hours are required and the student's program is directed by a Doctoral Program Committee. The language requirements are the same as for the MA, except the students in classical archaeology are expected to have a good reading knowledge of both Greek and Latin.

Admission to the Department on the graduate level is granted yearly to a small number of candidates who hold recognized BA or MA degrees in art history or art, in classical archaeology or classics, or in related fields of the humanities or the fine arts. In addition to the 3.0 GPA required by the Graduate School, the department requires a GPA of 3.3 in the major field, a combined score on the quantitative and verbal sections on th GRE of at least 1000, and a score on the analytical writing section of at least 4.5; or a total score of at least 1500 on the GRE if taken prior to 2002, and at least three semesters of an appropriate foreign language.

Applications are due by January 18 and must include a transcript, results of a recent Graduate Record Exam, three letters of recommendation, a short statement of professional goals and reasons for applying to do graduate work, a copy of a recent term paper, and a curriculum vitae.
