Course Requirements for the M.A. in Art History and Archaeology

Requirements for the degree are a minimum of 30 credit-hours:

Allocation of courses

  • At least 15 hours must be at the 8000 or 9000 level.
  • AHA 8100 (Introduction to Graduate Study) is required of MA and PhD students in the first year of graduate study.
  • At least two seminars (6 hours) are required.
  • not more than 9 hours can be reading courses or special problems, specifically 8080 or 9080.
  • the program should include at least one 7000-level course from each of three time periods (ancient, medieval/renaissance, and modern)

Special Circumstances

  • Students in historic preservation must take AHA 7170 and 7980 (an internship) in addition to these 30 hours.
  • A student who has an insufficient background in related fields such as history, literature and philosophy, is expected at least to audit courses in the respective departments in or above the 7000-level.
  • Courses for an interdisciplinary minor may not be counted within the 30 hours required for the M.A.
