Master of Arts in Art History and Archaeology

The department considers the M.A. a broad training program characterized by a diversity of courses. This degree usually qualifies the holder for some work in museums, in historic preservation, in slide libraries, and is a prerequisite for the Ph.D. Two options for satisfying degree requirements are available: thesis and non-thesis. The thesis option is required for admission to the Ph.D. program.

  1. Course requirements: A minimum of 30 credit hours (31 for the non-thesis option; see below). Courses for an interdisciplinary minor field will be in addition to these minimums.
  2. Language requirements: Students in Art History must demonstrate a reading knowledge of German, and French or Italian (for the non-thesis option, any one of these languages). In addition to German and either French or Italian, M.A. students in Classical Archaeology are expected to have a reading knowledge of either Greek or Latin.
  3. Thesis: The topic of the thesis will be chosen in consultation with the student's faculty advisor. The subject should be limited so that students can demonstrate their familiarity with the bibliography in the field, their critical and organizational abilities, and their ability to write in a scholarly manner. While the thesis need not be an original contribution, neither can it be an uncritical compilation of published facts. A draft of the thesis must be submitted to the advisor at least two months before the final draft of the thesis is due. The final draft will be defended before a three-member committee, one of whom will be the student's advisor and another who will be from outside the Department. Advising and defense can take place only during the Fall and Winter semesters.
  1. Non-thesis option : Requirements for this option are: reading knowledge of either German, French, or Italian; a minimum of 31 credit hours; completion, for one credit hour as AHA 8070 (Master's Tutorial), of a substantial scholarly essay, which will normally be a revision of a research paper from any graduate course taken in the Department of Art History and Archaeology.
