Departmental Honors Program

The honors program permits qualified students to begin advanced work by participating in graduate courses and beginning independent research and writing. Completion of the program greatly facilitates entry into a graduate school. The program is carried out in addition to the regular degree requirements described for a major in art history or archaeology.

Requirements for Departmental Honors

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.3
  • 30 hours of upperclass courses in art history and archaeology and in related fields must be completed with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25
  • Completion of AHA 4996
  • Completion and defense of a senior honors thesis (AHA 4999)

The honors program is flexible in order to provide an opportunity for students to pursue individual interests. The program should begin no later than the last fall semester (for seniors graduating in May or December) or the previous Fall semester (for December graduates). After completing AHA 4996, a student chooses his or her topic and writes a senior honors paper based on original research. An oral examination, given by a committee of the faculty, is also required. This student chooses the members of the committee, which must include the faculty adviser and one faculty member from outside the Department.

In certain cases the faculty may recommend that a student receive departmental honors for excellence in the performance of a substantial, extended, and guided research project. Such a project must be proposed in advance to and approved by the faculty member with whom the student will work. Students are reminded that departmental honors in these cases will be awarded for excellent work, not simply for completing the project.
