Undergraduate program in
Art History and Archaeology
Any student who has been accepted by the College of Arts and Science of the University of Missouri-Columbia is eligible to plan an area of concentration in art history and archaeology. All requirements and restrictions for the baccalaureate degree apply. For more information, see the Undergraduate Catalog, which contains the official rules and regulations governing academic practices affecting all students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The subjects of study in art history and archaeology are, broadly speaking, the development of European and American cultures and the artistic manifestations of those cultures, both of which are important parts of our humanistic traditions. Courses in Islamic art and occasionally in other non-western fields are also offered.
Students become acquainted with the methodology and research tools of the discipline as well as with its subject matter, and are encouraged to explore such related aspects of culture as history and literature. In addition to providing those elements of a liberal education, the program prepares students who wish to specialize in art history or classical archaeology for graduate work.
Although few vocational or professional opportunities are open specifically to the holder of a B.A. degree in art history and archaeology, the emphasis of the program on a liberal arts education assures the student of a preparation that can be easily adapted to his or her goals. He or she can move into sales or research, and with some additional preparation, into arts management, secondary education, library science, or conservation.
In some graduate programs one can also receive an education leading to a career in museum work, historic preservation or journalism. To be a fully-educated academic or museum professional in art history or archaeology one must complete the Ph.D. degree.
